Crate Training 101 with Charlie’s Mutts
Your puppy’s crate should be their safe haven, a cozy space where they can sleep, eat, relax, and unwind. The key to successful crate training is making sure it’s always a positive experience. Start by creating a comfortable environment for your pup with a soft bed or towel inside the crate, keeping an eye out to ensure they don’t chew it up. Feeding your puppy their meals, treats, and long-lasting chews in the crate helps them build positive associations, while tossing a few treats or bits of kibble inside to encourage them to go in on their own makes it a fun and rewarding experience.

When you begin crate training, start slow. Leave your puppy in the crate for just a few minutes at a time, gradually increasing the duration as they become more comfortable being away from you. In the early stages, try doing this while you’re still in the room before eventually stepping out. Allow your puppy to choose to rest in the crate on their own terms. Make sure to keep the crate and bedding clean to maintain a fresh, welcoming space.
It’s also important to know what not to do. Avoid choosing a crate that’s too big or too small your pup should have enough room to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. If you’re using a crate they’ll grow into, block off the extra space they don’t need just yet, until they’re big enough. Never respond to whining, whether positively or negatively, as this teaches your puppy that whining gets attention. Don’t force your puppy into the crate or use it as punishment, as this can create fear and anxiety rather than comfort. Lastly, take your time crate training should be gradual. Your puppy’s first few experiences should never involve being left alone for hours at a time.
